BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week’s Burying the Typewriter author Carmen Bugan makes her WoWFest debut. Carmen Bugan first had an inkling at her parents' radical activism when she found her father burying his typewriter in the backyard. Then at 2 a.m. on 10 March 1983, Carmen's father left the family home to protest against Ceausescu's regime in Romania with a mountain of leaflets he’d been writing on the contraband equipment. Returning home, she found the secret police in her living room; during her father's five-year imprisonment, they came and went from the family home as they pleased. Having their food confiscated, their garden destroyed, and their home under close surveillance, it was left to 12-year old Carmen to hold the fort. BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week’s

Author of six books, she has been shortlisted for the George Orwell Prize for Political Writing, and was a finalist in the Dayton Literary Peace Prize. Winner of the Bread Load Conference Nonfiction Prize and a Waterstones Book Club Choice, Carmen is an internationally significant author with a visceral and impressive ability to move audiences and readers with her words.
