In Conversation with Dave Haslam Plus Special Screening of 24 Hour Party People

Join us for an evening that celebrates the influence of Manchester music in the late 80s/early 90s. As well as a screening of the brilliant 24 Hour Party People we will be talking about those Madchester years when it seemed everything revolved around the Hacienda while The Stone Roses and The Happy Mondays were setting the world alight. We will be joined by Manc music royalty in the shape of Dave Haslam who began as a Hacienda DJ and now is a renowned music author and commentator. Dave will be talking about what made Manchester so special during those years, the magic of the Hacienda, Factory Records, Tony Wilson, and the characters and bands that made the city infamous. The magic and madness of this often chaotic period is captured perfectly in the film which was written by Frank Cottrell Boyce, Directed by Michael Winterbottom, and starred Steve Coogan with his brilliant portrayal of the legendary Tony Wilson.

Manchester, 1976. Tony Wilson (Steve Coogan) is an ambitious but frustrated local TV news reporter looking for a way to make his mark. After witnessing a life-changing concert by a band known as the Sex Pistols, he persuades his station to televise one of their performances, and soon Manchester's punk groups are clamouring for him to manage them. Riding the wave of a musical revolution, Wilson and his friends create the legendary Factory Records label and The Hacienda club.

DJ and writer Dave Haslam made his DJing debut at the Hacienda in 1986. He played there almost five hundred times; including on the final night of the club in 1997. Laurent Garnier, Ian Brown, and the Chemical Brothers have credited his sets as an inspiration. He’s appeared on TV and radio discussing subjects as diverse as urban regeneration, Friedrich Engels, Rock Against Racism, and Daft Punk. The latest of his four books, ‘Life After Dark: A History of British Nightclubs & Music Venues’, was published in 2015. He attended Joy Division's last ever show in May 1980; Sonic Youth have slept on his floor; Tony Wilson threatened to shoot him; he went with John Peel to see Public Enemy; and he’s interviewed the likes of John Lydon, Jeremy Deller, Jarvis Cocker, Neneh Cherry, Nile Rodgers, and David Byrne.
