Doctor Marigold (one of Charles' most popular performances during his reading tours) is a market cheapjack, addressing the audience directly with his fast-paced sales patter. As he talks, he begins to tell his life story, which is at once funny, tragic, heart breaking, uplifting and ultimately life affirming.
