Announcing Pulp Idol guest judges representing two of the largest literary agencies in the UK: Laura Williams (Peters, Fraser and Dunlop) and Lucy Morris (Curtis Brown).

Pulp Idol is a unique national writing competition for novelists whch has been very successful in getting new novelists published by mainstream and independent publishers such as Hodder and Stoughton and Bluemoose Books. Pulp Idol is an inspiring opportunity for writers which focuses on supporting new original voices, getting them heard, and bridging the gap between the national publishing industry and Merseyside. We provide a platform for up-and-coming writers, helping with exposure to new audiences and providing contacts with key publishers and agents.

Pulp Idol’s success has produced some outstanding literary talent throughout the years, none so quickly as this year’s runner-up Ariel Kahn. His spellbinding debut novel ‘Raising Sparks’ was quickly snapped up by awarding-winning north east independent publishers Bluemoose Books, after our phenomenal final at WoWfest 18 in May. Be sure to pick up a copy of his debut novel Raising Sparks when it’s released on July 1st, 2018.

Literary agent Laura Williams of Peters Fraser and Dunlop (PFD) returns as a Pulp Idol Final judge for the third year running. We’re delighted to welcome back her impeccable taste, ear for winner and her ever-present generosity to new writers. Laura has been with PFD for eleven years since completing a degree in Classics at Oxford. She is actively building a fiction list and a small non-fiction list. She is currently looking for literary fiction, edgy commercial fiction, psychological thrillers and high-concept contemporary young adult, as well as narrative non-fiction of all types. Her taste is quite dark, and she loves gothic, ghost stories, horror and anything sinister. She also loves books that make her cry, like a big love story or intense family drama. Laura’s clients include Sophie Draper (The Pear Drum), Sarah Goodwin (Nightfires in the Distance), Barney Norris (Turning for Home), and former Pulp Idol winner, Helen Dring, who is currently working on Whatever Happened to Sophie McClure, her first novel for young adults.

Lucy Morris joined the Curtis Brown Books Department in September 2014 from Bloomsbury Publishing. She is building her own list of reading group and accessible literary fiction, narrative non-fiction and memoir. On the fiction side Lucy looks for brilliant social observation and clever storytelling, and particularly loves working with debut novelists – a bonus for Pulp Idol! She is looking for a great returning detective like Susie Steiner’s Manon Bradshaw, and is also be keen to find some stylish, nail-biting suspense in the vein of Patricia Highsmith. She also loves the domestic realism of Anne Tyler – stories about families are guaranteed to pique her interest. Her clients include Fran Cooper (These Dividing Walls), Michael Imperioli (Sopranos), Brian Freeman (Spilled Blood) and Thea Lim (An Ocean of Minutes)
